Hugh began his career with his family's soft drink and plastic manufacturing enterprise Cape Breton Beverages Ltd. His duties included overseeing plant expansion and redevelopment of redundant assets. This led to a fifteen year career in the commercial and residential development in his home town of Sydney, Nova Scotia.

His early developments included 500 George Place, the pre-development of The Cambridge Suites and the purchase and ownership by his development company H.B. Lynch Investments Inc. of the Cabot House, a residential and commercial high rise and Days Inn Hotel. He structured a three-hotel property sale to Fortis Hospitality of St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. Hugh then went on to construct Moxham Court a top of market multi-unit residential property as well as Moxham Centre a commercial residential property.

Hugh is also a proven investor in new technologies. He was a co-founder of SamSys Technologies Inc, a North Carolina based technology company. Currently Hugh acts as director of a number of companies including HotButton Solutions Inc., a Calgary based software company that provides software solutions to the oil and gas industry and asset tracking solutions to the military sector.
